Solar Technology
It’s free, it’s clean and it’s everywhere!. Energy from the sun is kind to the environment and helps to reduce your carbon footprint as well as your energy bills – so it’s a win for your pocket and a win for the planet.
The Electric Ireland Home Services Team can help you to use solar energy for your home in two ways. Solar thermal uses the heat of the sun to heat your hot water while solar PV (photovoltaic) uses sunlight to generate electricity.
Solar Thermal
Solar thermal panels collect heat from the sun and use it directly to heat your household water.
How does it work?
There are two types of solar thermal panels, flat plate and evacuated tube, and they can be roof mounted in a variety of ways depending on what direction your house is facing.
Solar panels can even be accommodated on flat roofs, on the ground or even on walls.
The Benefits
In summer, almost all of an average family’s hot water needs can be met by the thermal panels. For the rest of the year the system still pre-heats the water so your boiler only needs to top up to the desired temperature.
More power from the sun means more savings on your energy bill!.
SEAI offer grant assistance for solar thermal, which makes it an attractive option for Irish consumers. For more information on SEAI grants visit www.seai.ie/grants
Solar PV
The PV stands for Photovoltaic, and if you’ve ever used a solar-powered calculator then you’re already familiar with the workings of solar PV.
How does it work?
The technology doesn’t capture the power of the sun’s heat, but it's light. It’s known as micro-generation as the energy is generated onsite.
The Benefits
By installing solar PV panels your energy consumption is lowered and your carbon footprint will be reduced.
Because you generate a portion of your own electricity you’re not totally dependent on the electricity grid.
Solar power means an improved BER rating.
